The Asahiflex I is the initial, groundbreaking model in the Asahiflex lineup, premiering in May 1952 as Japan’s very first production 35mm SLR camera. Developed by the Asahi Optical Co. under the leadership of Saburo Matsumoto, it features a unique M37 screw mount, a non-instant-return mirror, and a top-down waist-level viewfinder. It was highly experimental for its time, breaking away from the rangefinder craze to pioneer the SLR platform in Asia.
